We will be immersing ourselves in Alpine History.  Visit a salt mine that goes back to pre-Roman Empire days when Celtic peoples began mining salt and building the original city of Salzburg on the Salzach River. Take a customized tour that will walk you through a history that began in Neolithic times, through Celtic Salzburg to the Roman city of Iuvavum and on through Medieval times until today. Walk through the streets that each of these cultures trod.  Visit the grounds of Nonnberg Abbey, the oldest convent in Europe, founded by Saint Rupert in 712.  This is about the time he ordered construction of the Salzburg Cathedral, which has been rebuilt several times and took its current baroque form during the Renaissance.  You will also visit Hohensalzburg, the hill fortress that protected the city, visit the places Mozart was born, was baptized and grew up, and take an optional Sound of Music tour.

  In Munich, we will explore both the vibrant culture of Bavaria and also its dark past.  Founded in 1158 when Duke Henry the Lion built a bridge over the Isar river to better control the salt trade between Salzburg and Augusburg.  Enjoy time at the famous Marienplatz and English gardens, take a guided tour to churches and palaces, and spend a day visiting Neuschwanstein Castle. Explore the places where the Nazi Party was born and rose to prominence, and take a trip to Dachau reeducation camp where many paid with their lives for speaking out against them. Finally, have a beer - or several, eat some wienerschnitzel, pretzels and brats and enjoy Bavarian culture.   You will have opportunities to adapt your trip to your particular needs.
